COB (Chip on Board) has become the leading technology for fine-pitch LED video walls. This guide explains how it works and why it matters — from XIV, a COB-focused LED manufacturer.
How COB Works
In COB construction, bare LED chips are bonded directly onto the PCB and the entire display surface is sealed with a resin layer. There are no individual plastic packages and no exposed solder pads — the result is a completely flat, protected surface.
COB vs SMD: Key Advantages
Durability: the sealed surface eliminates bead drop-off, the most common SMD failure mode
Fine pitch capability: COB supports P0.9 and below, where SMD packaging reaches physical limits
Contrast: uniform black resin surface achieves 10000:1-class contrast ratios
Moisture and dust resistance: sealed construction performs reliably even in humid climates — a major advantage in Southeast Asia
Easy cleaning: flat surfaces can be wiped with a damp cloth
Flip-Chip COB: The Next Step
Flip-chip COB eliminates bonding wires entirely by mounting chip electrodes directly to the board. This removes the main remaining failure factor and reduces power consumption — XIV's CV-PRO+ series averages just 90W/m².
When to Choose COB
Viewing distance under 3m (control rooms, studios, meeting rooms)
Locations where people can touch the screen
High-humidity or coastal environments
24/7 mission-critical operation
